Andrew Carbis graduated from UWIC with a degree in Building Maintenance Management. He is specialising in Construction.
‘My degree was Construction-related and I had already made the decision to move into house building before I applied to Barratt. It seemed like a sector facing some tough issues, especially in terms of land availability. I also liked the idea of being able to go on-site and see a finished product which can improve people’s quality of life.
‘So I applied to Barratt and a number of other house builders. However, the quality of the application process meant that Barratt really stood out. It was very professional from start to finish. There was no time or energy wasted and, as soon as you start on your first day, you’ve got such a good grasp of what’s required that you can get straight into the job. In my first week, I was out on site immediately, shadowing the Site Manager. I’ve already learnt a lot about programming works, build phases and how to manage site resources.
‘The Programme is really structured, with clear milestones so you know exactly what you need to achieve and by when. It can seem daunting, but you get lots of support. There is also lots of flexibility, so once you know your strengths after the first year, you can specialise and build practical skills.’
